Dental Implants

Our Price: Varies

Dental implants are an effective surgical alternative to more traditional smile solutions such as dentures and bridges, and are often a better long-term approach for dental issues. Dental implants are prosthetic devices that are surgically attached to the jawbone, giving patients with missing teeth a permanent solution that avoids the hassle and inconvenience of dentures.

Studies show that nearly 70% of all adults will have lost at least one permanent tooth due to accident, gum disease, a failed root canal or tooth decay between the ages of 35 and 44. By age 74, 26% of adults lose all their permanent teeth.

Dental Implants Procedure

Dental Center of Excellence

MedicalMex ideal solution for replacing a missing tooth is a dental implant. Dental implants are prosthetic devices anchored by a screw-like “root” composed of titanium metal that “fuses” with the jawbone, restoring the patient’s ability to eat, speak clearly and smile with ease.

Dental implant patients will want a clean, modern facility with highly qualified and experienced dental surgeons and that is exactly what they will find at Tijuana MedicalMexs Dental Clinic. Dental work is our most popular procedure area and we see patients from the U.S., Canada and beyond.

Long-term follow-up studies of patients receiving dental implants show the clear majority continue to function effectively 20 years and more after being placed. More importantly, dental implant patients remain satisfied with their choice 20 plus years down the road. When properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants are composed of three parts: a titanium post (“root”) that fuses with the jawbone; an “abutment,” which fits over the portion of the implant that protrudes from the gum line; and a “crown,” which is fashioned by a prosthodontist or restorative dentist and fits onto the abutment, creating a natural appearance.

Our process at MedicalMex, for fitting a patient with dental implants features the best of modern science and technology and requires a close team effort among the patient, our restorative dentist (who designs and creates the crown) and our oral surgeon (who first implants the post and then attaches the crown) to achieve long-lasting implant success and patient satisfaction. After an evaluation that includes a comprehensive oral examination, X-rays and consultation among the patient and members of the MedicalMex implant team, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon surgically places the post, or implant, in the patient’s jaw using local anesthesia.

After placing the implant, a cover screw is put in and the wound is closed with stitches and allowed to heal. In general, placements in the lower jaw need about four-six months to heal and effectively fuse with the jawbone. Placements in the upper jaw usually require six months to fuse and heal.

Once the post is fused with the jawbone, a second visit is required after six months to allow full healing, to fit final abutment & crown placement.  Dr. Serecero uses Zest Locator abutments which are the most versatile on the market and can accommodate implants that have been poorly placed at an angle by other dentists.

After the procedure, the patient is provided with very clear care instructions to follow. Few need to be seen by the dentist in between visits. Care after the procedure is like any regular dental maintenance and does not require trips to a specialist.

Dental implants can be an effective solution for almost anyone, regardless of age or the number of missing teeth that need to be addressed. Implants are not generally advised for young children because their jaw growth is not complete. However, in some instances a dental implant could be appropriate, such as when it is part of a child’s orthodontic treatment plan. Consultation with a family dentist or orthodontist will help parents decide if dental implants are appropriate in their child’s case.

Otherwise, even some health conditions that could prevent a patient from undergoing other types of surgery may not rule out the possibility of successful dental implant surgery.

Almost any patient who can have routine dental treatment can generally receive a dental implant. While precautions are advisable for some conditions, even patients with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes are usually candidates for successful dental implant surgery.

Patients who have lost their teeth to periodontal disease or decay are among the more successfully treated using dental implants. Implants can also replace removable bridges or dentures, or they can be used to stabilize and secure the denture, making it more comfortable and giving the patient greater peace of mind.

Although smoking has been shown to lower the success rate of implants, it doesn’t eliminate consideration of the treatment as a viable solution.

Otherwise, the primary predictor for the success of dental implants in a patient is the volume and condition of the bone in the jaw where the implant will be placed.

When a tooth or teeth are lost, there is a natural resorption, or a thinning, of the bone in the area. The less bone available in which to place the implant, the greater the chance of the implant not “taking.” In cases where there is not enough bone to support a successful implant, the surgeon may perform a bone graft. At MedicalMex Dental, we use a synthetic bone grafting compound that is easier and more successful than bone on bone grafting. It can usually be done at the time of the implant surgery, allowing everything to heal into place together, which ultimately makes for a more solid implant.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants have both intrinsic and external benefits, and represent the closest way currently available to restore the mouth to its original condition after tooth loss. Dental implants also feel closer to having a natural tooth than is possible with any other restorative treatment available today.

Intrinsically, dental implants preserve the health and function of surrounding teeth and help avoid tooth migration and loss of structure that can result with tooth loss. Implants can also reduce the impact of the lost tooth on surrounding teeth, because traditional bridge structures often require filing down the adjacent teeth to hold the bridge in place with crowns.

As a replacement for or alternative to dentures, dental implants have even more benefits. Dentures notoriously slip and make embarrassing clicking sounds that unmistakably mark the wearer as having “false teeth.” Poorly fitting dentures can even affect diet, restricting choices to foods that are easily chewed. Implants allow patients to eat food of almost all types, other than extremely hard foods such as ice, pits, or popcorn kernels.

Beyond these benefits, patients with dental implants report having an attractive, natural-looking smile that gives them increased self-esteem and confidence in social situations.

Possible Complications

As with any surgery, dental implants carry certain risks every patient should discuss thoroughly with their surgeon and understand completely before embarking on the long, arduous journey involved in choosing this treatment. Dental implants have a 90-95 percent success rate when the surgery is performed correctly and implants are placed properly.
